30 common idioms (IELTS class in TEST - English School)

Hi Guys, I just got 30 common idioms .. Let's practice in our daily :D

1.            An arm and a leg = Very Expensive

2.            Over the moon = Extremely pleased or happy

3.            Jumping the gun = Doing or starting something too early

4.            One in blue moon = Happening very rarely

5.            Under the weather = Unwell

6.            A piece of cake = Very easy

7.            A drop in the ocean = A very small part of something much bigger

8.            Practice makes perfect = Continuously doing something to improve

9.            Actions speak louder than words = It’s better to actually do something rather than just talking about it

10.          It’s a small world = Meeting someone you would not have expected to

 

11.          Back to the drawing board = When an attempt to do something fails and it’s time to start all over again using different way

12.          I’m really stuck / caught between a rock and a hard place = Having two very bad choice (note: stuck/caught can be omitted)

13.          Bite my tongue = Wanting to say something but stopping yourself

14.          Cut to the case = Leave out all the unnecessary details and just get to the point

15.          Working against to clock = Not having enough time to do something

16.          Every cloud has a silver lining = Believing that every bad situation has a positive side / eventually leads to something good

17.          Found my feet = To become comfortable in what you are doing

18.          Smell a rat = To sense that something is not right

19.          Break a leg = Good luck

20.          Go the extra mile = Doing much more than is required when doing something


21.          Hit the nail on the head = Say exactly the right thing

22.          If it’s not one thing. It’s the other = When everything seems to be going wrong

23.          The heat of the moment = Saying or doing something suddenly without thinking about it

24.          Keep an eye on him = Watch someone or something carefully

25.          Tongue-in-cheek = Something said in humour rather than seriously

26.          Let sleeping dogs lie =Avoid a conflict

27.          Let the cat out of the bag = Tell someone something that you were not supposed to

28.          Bite the hand that feeds you = Hurt or upset someone who is helping you

29.          Sitting on the fence = Not making a firm decision between different choices

30.          Until the cows come home = For a very long time
