Good
evening folks,, I am going to address you about the lesson that we can
take from the Titanic which was the topic that I got in the last
speaking class in this week.
To begin, the Titanic was the
luxurious and the finest ship ever built in the world. The RMS Titanic
left Southampton for New York on April 10, 1912. Some richest people and
most famous had paid large sums of money to sail by using
it. The Titanic was a huge ship which was larger at 269 metres than of
the tallest buildings of the day. And with nine decks, she was as high
as eleven storey building. She carried 2,224 passengers. They are 329
first class, 285 second class and 710 third class passengers with 899
crew members. To feed a small town for five day journey, she carried
many foods including 40,000 eggs, 36,000 apples, 111,000 lbs of fresh
meat and 2,220 lbs of coffee.
The Titanic's maiden voyage was
in 1912, and did sink on April 14, 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean,
taking 1,517 of her passengers and crew with her. There are several
causes of the disaster. Firstly, there was only one of six warnings of
icebergs that was received by the Titanic wireless operators. So, she
made the fatal collision with an iceberg at 11.40pm. Secondly, even
though Captain Edward J. Smith knew that since the spring weather in
Greenland cause huge chunks of ice. But, he still took a dangerous route
by sailing the ship through that way. The impact that they faced was
such a great loss of life. Many passenger drowned in that time. It was
over 1,500 passenger and the other people were loaded into 20 lifeboats.
Whereas, there were 473 empty seat available on lifeboats.
Those problems arise the issues about the capacity of lifeboats.
Why the lifeboats were not enough to accommodate all of the passengers,
and why those were not full. Actually, when she made a collision with
iceberg, the passenger did not realize that the Titanic would sink
because they believed that the ship was strong enough to face the term
of this, and was unsinkable. So, at the time, the crew did not wake up
their radio operator to listen for a distress call. Also, There ware no
one could be blame although the officers in charge of loading the boats
for the sinking which had contributed to the miraculous loss of life.
So, for those reasons, the government make the regulations due to
improve safety produces at sea such as covering 24 hours wireless
operation, crew training, proper lifeboat drills, lifeboat capacity for
all on board and creation of an international ice patrol.
